Deux côtés du même océan
Le reel d’Hélène - Émile Benoît
The Whaap - Brian Cromarty
Reel à bouche (turlute québécoise sur le reel irlandais The Hunter’s Purse)
Banish Misfortune (trad irlandais)
arr. Archetype Trad

Émile Benoît was one of Newfoundland’s most celebrated fiddlers and composers. We play Émilie’s bluegrass-tinged arrangement of his reel at a relatively slow tempo. The Whaap was written by Brian Cromarty of Saltfishforty, a duo from the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland. Whaap is the Orcadian name for a curlew (a bird with a long curved bill), and this groovy reel is so much fun to play! We launch into a turlutte version of the Irish reel, The Hunter’s Purse, known in Quebec as Reel à bouche. This set ends with a great Irish Jig, Banish Misfortune. We love this set because all the tunes are in mixolydian mode, a common mode in folk, jazz, rock, funk and blues music.
